In our little kitchen, a lot of energy and creativity are always at the forefront. Today my daughter was home sick and she wanted to make her usual chocolate balls. However as she was sick I didnt want her to get any sugar, even if its coconutsugar, to enable her bacteria to go away as soon as possible. So we made up this recipe together. No sugar - but instead we switched it out with Lacuma powder. Lacuma being a superfood with a sweet and fresh taste. 2 teaspoons equals 1 teaspoon suagr in 'sweetness', but it gives a very mild natural sweetness. This receipeturned out to be a perfect healthy snack with the kids. They are great as an afternoon snack or a wholesome dessert. Or to have with on a trip to the park or beach.
With just a few simple ingredients, we can create these energy balls. They are fun to make and guaranteed to be healthy. We mixed it in a blender for the ease of it.
Ingredients
To make our energy balls, we'll need the following ingredients:
2 teaspoons chia seeds
2 teaspoons tahini
2 cups rolled oats
A splash of liquid (water or oat milk)
3 dates
2 teaspoons cocoa powder
2 teaspoons lucuma powder
100 grams butter (not margerine, pure butter)
coconut shredded - optional if you want to roll the balls in that.
Most children can even help measure them out - and its fun.
Preparation
First, gather all the ingredients. This is a great first step for making cooking fun! Malu loves to present the ingredients one by one.
In a blender, combine the rolled oats, chia seeds, cocoa powder, and lucuma powder. This mix serves as the base for our energy balls.
Next, add the tahini and chopped dates.
Pour a splash of liquid into the mixture. You can use water or oat milk, depending on what you have at home. Just to get the right consistency to make balls.

Take a spoonful of the mixture and roll it between your hands to create small balls. This is a fantastic activity for kids, as it helps develop their motor skills while being enjoyable!
Place the balls on a cutting board or baking sheet once they are formed. It might be a good idea to have some extra rolled oats or coconut flakes to roll them in for added flavor and texture.
Once all the balls are shaped, you can place them in the fridge/freezer for about 30 minutes to firm them up and make them easier to eat.
Snacktime!
When the energy balls are ready, it’s time to taste them. They can be eaten as-is, or you can pack them in a small container for an on-the-go snack.
These energy balls are not just a nutritious snack; they're also loaded with nutrients from chia seeds, which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, and dates, which provide natural sweetness. The addition of lucuma powder not only adds a unique flavor but also an extra nutritional boost.
A Fun Kitchen Experience
Making natural energy balls with kids can be a fun and educational experience. These energy balls are easy to prepare, and you can vary the ingredients based on what you have at home.
